About The Owners...

Hi there!  My name is Sandy Narum.  My husband, Bill, and I own Papa’s Nest {egg}.  I have retired from a 30-year career in medical administration, and just between you and me, I honestly believed I didn’t have a creative bone in my body!  We purchased a foreclosure several years ago, and we pretty much gutted all of it except for the tubs and the kitchen cabinets.  The cabinets were too expensive to replace, so I had to figure out how I was going to make very worn, builder’s-grade oak cabinets look presentable once again.

That said…I learned how to use chalk paint.

Why chalk paint?  Because I had heard that I wouldn’t have to sand or strip the cabinets back down to natural wood, and I wanted the easy route to get the job done.  I did not use Dixie Belle on my cabinets, but I sure learned a lot about what to do and not do in the process.  From there, I moved onto some of our furniture that needed updating, and just like that: a new career was born!

After using five different brands of chalk-type paints, I decided I wanted to become a Dixie Belle Paint retailer, and I opened Papa’s.  Why Dixie Belle?  It is made in the USA, which is very important to me on lots of levels; it’s a woman-owned business; and the paints are top quality, very durable, incredibly forgiving and easy, easy, easy to use.  The line is packed full of products that work well together and allow your creative juices to flow.  Dixie Belle are great educators with lots of tutorials all over YouTube and Facebook on the variety of techniques and projects you can take on.  No furniture stripping, just a bit of scuff sanding on a clean surface, and you’re ready to go!  I’ve used and sold this product now for over three years without complaint, and that should speak volumes to you!

My favorite thing to do now is to take someone’s toss to the curb piece of furniture and to drag it home for my husband to repair and for me to paint to make it look like new once again.  My second favorite thing to do is to teach others how to do the same!

With this COVID environment we’re living in right now, I’m currently doing private and small group classes only in my climate-controlled garage with appropriate social distancing and masks as needed.  Once things get back to normal (and I’m sure they will at some point), I’ll be doing larger classes once again in and around Baldwin City.

If you have a project piece you would like to get started on, or a kitchen that needs a fresh look, give me a call at (785) 594-1420 and let me show you how easy it is to go from drab to fab with Dixie Belle paints – and learn how you can be creative too!
